My first born just turned four years old and I keep having these moments where it all feels so surreal. How is he already 4? Literally, pinching myself. OUCH!
This may be my last year of choosing the theme before my opinionated boy finally starts throwing ideas. Right now, he’s pretty laid back about party themes as he’s just glad to play and have fun with friends so I allowed myself to get carried away just one last time. As I sat and pondered potential themes, I’m embarrassed to say the pun-loving side of me was drawing blanks. I actually gave up on a punny theme and was leaning towards Spiderman (a forever fav) and Mickey Mouse (a household staple.) I was chatting with a friend about wanting to have a golf day at the local golf club nearby and mentioned I may wait until my son’s birthday to make it a family experience. It was after this chat that the party theme hit me like a golf ball when I least expected it. FOOOORRE!

Decor
As a predominantly DIY party, I knew I would have a very small window to clean, decorate, food prep and set up activities. I had to pick my priorities wisely and decided to leave the decor scant…not ideal but hey *shrug* sometimes less is more?.
I pre made a streamers backdrop from crepe paper rolls. I made it in two haves and assembled at the party by taping to a wall.
I also re-used this brick banner (from the my son’s second birthday party to create a back drop for the party favours. I used regular sticker paper to cut the words “Bellamy’s Pro Shop.” I had this idea to create a sports store look for this area so I think the brick served well as the “wall” if you will. If you keep reading, you’ll see what it all looked like in the end.
Favours
I used a book shelf to display these golf ball cups for the kids. I also got these golf sets for the kids to take home to continue to play. It includes 2 golf clubs, 2 bars, a plastic tee of sorts and a “hole.” I hung them on a clothing rack to further enhance the vision of this being a “store.”

Food

I love the idea of using the food, the menu and the table setting as a part of the decor. What a fun way to play up your theme with fun puns and cute names. I personally love getting creative with renaming regular party food items to fit the theme. You can view this video For this event we served club sandwiches secured with a golf club pick. I served rotisserie chicken as birdies; but wings, or even nuggets are great alternatives here. I made a toss salad which doubled as the greens and bottled water for the water hazard. You could have an entire beverage cart/table/bar labelled as water hazard as well.
Yogurt and fruit made a simple but delicious fruit parfait, and these jello shots were the perfect hole-in-one.

These sugar cookies by my regular cookie designer were a hit.

Entertainment
For the kids activities I set up the entire yard into various play areas. I had a small white bounce house with an attached ball pit. I also lay out some foam mats with some soft play shapes. In terms of a golf theme activities I bought this grass turf mat and this kids golf obstacle course set that comes with included club, driver and balls; ready for play.

I also bought this portable putting green for the older kids and adults to enjoy. This would make great practice and can be used with real golf clubs and balls.

These kids golf set are great for playing in the yard and I would highly recommend for extra clubs.
Cake
I kept the budget simple for cake this year. TBH, I knew it would be expensive to get a cake to match my vision so I decided to do-it-myself. As the self-proclaimed party DIY queen, it’s only fitting. I zhuzhed up a store bought cake and it was literally nearly perfect. Watch this video for the before and after:
All hail the queen!, am-i-right?
The golf ball sitting on top is actually a candle. You can find everything I used to decorate the cake here: Golf Scenery Cake.
Feel free to check out my party prep video to see how everything came together.
PS: This was originally written 2025 but I forgot to publish and it feels inauthentic to rewrite in the past tense. PPS: blame it on adhd. PPPS: stay tuned for five 🙂
